The first step in preserving an amputated part is to wrap it in a cool, moist dressing. This method helps to keep the tissue viable for potential reattachment. Additionally, the cooling effect helps slow down metabolic processes in the tissue, which can extend the time the tissue remains suitable for possible surgical reattachment.

Maintaining the tissue in the best possible condition is crucial; thus, a dry cloth would not provide the necessary moisture, and soaking the part in alcohol can cause further tissue damage and is not appropriate for preservation. Sealing an amputated part in a vacuum bag does not allow for the necessary moisture and is not a recommended method for preserving such tissue for medical use.
